Hollywood Costume Designer & Kimono Master

Sueko Oshimoto

Sueko Oshimoto's journey with the kimono is her life's story. It began with a childhood fascination in Okinawa, Japan, and evolved into a lifelong dedication to mastering its art. After rigorous traditional training, she brought her unparalleled expertise to the United States in 1999. Her path led her first to the prestigious Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, before she brought her vision to Los Angeles in 2007 to establish the Yamano Kitsuke School, sharing her deep knowledge with a new audience.

Her artistic sensibility and profound understanding of tradition quickly established her as Hollywood's most trusted authority on authentic Japanese costume design. Her masterful work has shaped the visual world of critically acclaimed productions, including HBO's "Westworld" and the Emmy-winning series "Shōgun."

As a member of the Costume Designers Guild, Sueko's name is synonymous with authenticity and excellence. Her contributions to the industry have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Hollywood Costume Designer Honor Award, the Best Costume award from the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival, and the prestigious Life Time Achievement in Style and Philanthropy Top Designer award.

But beyond the glamour of Hollywood, her mission has always been to be a cultural bridge—to share the profound beauty and intricate stories woven into every thread of the kimono.

Kentaro Terauchi wearing a black t-shirt in a blurred indoor setting

Artist, Photographer & Kimono Stylist

Kentaro Terauchi

Kentaro Terauchi views the kimono through the lens of an artist. As a licensed kitsuke stylist and photographer, he possesses a unique ability to deconstruct traditional aesthetics and reimagine them for the modern world. His work is a dialogue between past and present, finding new expressions of beauty in the timeless silhouette of the kimono.

Known in the art world as Kentaro Terra, his sought-after aesthetic has also made him the personal photographer for the world-renowned Chef Masaharu Morimoto. This unique vision shapes the entire visual identity of KIMONO SK. From the art direction of our photography to the innovative styling that inspires our clients, Kentaro ensures that every visual element is not just beautiful, but also tells a compelling story. He is the modern soul of the atelier, constantly pushing the boundaries of how the kimono can be worn, seen, and experienced.

2010: The Birth of an Atelier

In 2010, Sueko and Kentaro—partners in life and in craft—united their distinct talents to create KIMONO SK in Los Angeles. It was born from a shared belief: that the kimono should not be a relic confined to museums, but a living, breathing art form to be experienced by a new generation.

Our atelier is more than a store or a studio; it is a space where Sueko's profound knowledge of tradition meets Kentaro's modern artistic sensibility. It is here that we fulfill our core mission: "To continue to evolve in order to protect tradition." We honor what must be preserved, while bravely reimagining what can be changed, creating a new, beautiful tradition for the world to embrace.

Our Philosophy

We believe every kimono tells a story. It is a canvas of history, a testament to craftsmanship, and a symbol of identity. Our role is not merely to sell these garments, but to act as their storytellers and caretakers.

Whether we are curating a vintage piece for our collection, designing a costume for a major film, or styling a client for a life-changing moment, our approach is rooted in three core principles:

Authenticity: Honoring the techniques, materials, and spirit of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Creativity: Fearlessly exploring new ways to style and integrate the kimono into modern life.

Connection: Building a community of lovers and learners, connected by a shared passion for this timeless art form.
