Behind the Scenes: KIMONO SK Brings Authentic Japanese Beauty to LA Opera’s "Madame Butterfly"
Konnichiwa!
Join us for a spectacular journey into the heart of Japanese culture. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown LA is currently filled with the spirit of Japan, and KIMONO SK is thrilled to be a part of it.
Our own Sueko Oshimoto and Kentaro Terauchi are honored to serve as kimono specialists for LA Opera’s stunning production of "Madame Butterfly," running from September 21 to October 13.

Our mission goes beyond simply dressing the artists. Sueko and Kentaro have been busy imparting the soul of Japanese tradition. They have been conducting lectures on basic kimono knowledge and, crucially, teaching the intricacies of shosa (所作) — the traditional movements and demeanor required to wear kimono beautifully.
Their expertise extends to coaching the opera’s world-class singers and chorus on how to move and act authentically while adorned in traditional attire.
Here is a glimpse into the intense and passionate rehearsals:

But a photo can only convey so much. To truly feel the energy of the room and see the beautiful shosa (movements) in action, you must watch the exclusive behind-the-scenes video footage Sueko Oshimoto has shared on her Instagram!

During this process, we experienced a truly wonderful surprise that we have to share.
We were delighted—and deeply moved—to learn that the professional LA Opera costume crew had already privately purchased our published book on kimono dressing before we even arrived! They had been using it as their trusted guide, a testament to its utility and accuracy.
Seeing this invaluable resource praised and utilized by top-tier professionals in such a demanding environment was an incredible honor. It confirmed that our book is an excellent guide for anyone serious about learning kimono dressing.
Do not miss the opportunity to experience this enthralling production where true professionalism meets traditional artistry.
