Konnichiwa!

Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" is a masterpiece of love and tragedy known around the world. But have you ever seen it performed with true Japanese soul?

KIMONO SK is proud to share the visual splendor of the Pacific Opera Project’s (POP) unique production. At the heart of this staging is the transformative costume design by our own Sueko Oshimoto.

A Vision of Authenticity (本物の追求)

Set in Nagasaki, the story of Cio-Cio San is a delicate balance of hope and despair. Sueko Oshimoto’s mission was to bring a level of historical accuracy and cultural depth rarely seen in western opera. Instead of "costumes" that merely look like kimonos, Sueko styled the cast in authentic garments that reflect the characters' status, emotions, and the era.

Visual Storytelling Through Textiles

The costumes are not just clothing; they are part of the narrative. From the vibrant, intricate patterns of the wedding scene representing Cio-Cio San’s innocence to the contrast of Western naval uniforms against traditional Japanese formal wear (montsuki), every fabric tells a story of cross-cultural collision.

A Unique Bilingual Experience

What makes this production truly special is its bilingual performance. Performed in both English and Japanese, this "Madama Butterfly" bridges cultural gaps, making the story accessible and deeply moving. It is a true collaboration of East meets West, much like the designs of KIMONO SK.
